The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
